Google is taking a step that will delight map and navigation users. It is integrating Gemini AI technology into Google Maps, Earth and Waze platforms. The company will not only update the map data; it will radically change the user experience. Here are the details

Thanks to Gemini AI, we are entering a smarter, more efficient and more user-friendly era in Google’s mapping ecosystem. For example, route recommendations in Google Maps are now smarter, while an AI system is being built for city planners that can quickly solve complex analyses.

Google Maps is now a large platform used by more than 10 million websites and apps around the world. With the Gemini AI integration, the platform will have the ability to analyze instant location data in real time.

This means that developers will be able to offer more interactive experiences based on location. For example, automaker Rivian will integrate the Places API powered by Gemini into its in-car infotainment system, providing drivers with AI-summarized information about nearby restaurants, shops and grocery stores.

There are also new developments on Google Earth. Gemini AI brings a major innovation for urban planners, even if it is of little interest to ordinary users. AI can solve complex analyses in minutes and provide visualizations. For example, when a transportation planner is thinking about where to place electric vehicle charging stations, Gemini AI will be able to instantly present the most suitable spots and efficient areas.

Google Maps users will be able to make location-based recommendations and route discoveries with smarter search results. New features include showing important landmarks along the route, indicating parking availability at the destination, and adding specific details to walking navigation.

The Waze platform is also part of the latest innovation. Now users will be able to report road conditions more fluently thanks to natural language processing (NLP). For example, when you see an obstacle on the road, you will be able to report the situation just by speaking. And by the end of the year, Waze will have new safety features for both iOS and Android users, such as school zone alerts.
